Folding kanzashi petals

Folding kanzashi petals - step 1

Start with a square of fabric, right side down. This square is about 6cm x 6cm.

Folding kanzashi petals - step 2

Fold the square into a triangle, now right side is facing up.

Folding kanzashi petals - step 3

Fold the fabric into a square again by bringing the points of the long side in to the centre point.

All the points are together, with the curved edge of the petal in the other corner.

Folding kanzashi petals - step 5

Fold the petal in half along the line from the points to the curved top of the petal. Fold the corners down (to the back).

Turn the petal over so the points up sticking up towards you.

Folding kanzashi petals - step 7

This is the tricky bit for me :-) Unfold each corner, then refold it so the corner now comes in to the centre line.

Here's the back of the petal, with the corners folding in to meet eachother in the middle of the back.

Folding kanzashi petals - step 9

With the back still facing you, fold the petal in half again, so that what was the outer edges of the petal (in the previous step) are touching eachother.

Folding kanzashi petals - step 10

Turn the petal back over to the front view, and poke a pin though at the point where my fingers are, so that you've pierced all layers of the fabric. Trim all the pointy ends off a short distance from the pin. Now the petal is ready to thread up. When stringing the petals together, thread through in the spot where the pin was.
