Blue Mohair Boucle Scarf tutorial

MATERIALS
Size 10 1/2 needles
1 skein variegated blue mohair boucle from Dorchester Farms - 62 yards per oz - $3.05 per oz. My skein had 4.4 oz and 272 yards. I used an entire skein to make one scarf. Total cost $13.42.

INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 24 stitches
Using the seed stitch, knit as follows
Row 1: *k1, p1; rep from *
Row 2: *k1, p1; rep from *
Repeat rows 1-2 until scarf reaches desired length.
Bind off stitches.
Weave in loose ends of yarn.

FRINGE
Cut approximately 48 pieces of yarn into 12" strands. Hold 3 strands together for each knot of fringe. Fold these 3 strands in half. Use a large crochet hook and pull the folded end through the edge of the scarf to be fringed from the right to wrong side. Pull loose ends through folded end. Pull knot up securely. Space the fringe about 1 inch apart. That should allow for about 7-8 strands of fringe along each end of the scarf. Trim ends evenly.

Measurements for my scarf 7.5 inches by 64 inches (before adding the fringe).

Tutorial: Earth Day! Newspaper Flowers and more...

First off, gather your materials:
Newspaper
Paint and Brushes
Scissors
Pipecleaners (I didn`t think of it when we were making these but you could recycle twist ties to use instead of pipecleaners)
Thrifted Colourful Buttons
Scrap bits of green yarn or ribbon
Small branches or twigs
Empty cereal box or something similar for template making
Ability to draw 5 different sized circles or have objects to trace
Optional: Vase to display them in (we used rice for support for the branches)

Tutorial: How To Make Fold & Twist Fabric Flowers

Step 1: Cut fabric in to 5" squares and then fold 3 pleats towards yourself.
             Iron in place and pin on each side.
This feels kind of awkward at first but keep practicing the fold so that it is even. Each pleat is about 1/2" inch.

Step 2: Stitch with matching thread on each side using a 1/4" seam. I sew them one right after the other, and then cut them apart.
I bought the ergonomic rotary cutter at the last quilt show I went to and really like it.

Step 3: Fold 3 pleats in the other direction and iron and pin.

You must iron each step down to help hold it and make sharp pleats.
Step 4: Sew each side down being careful not to let fold get caught in seam.
Step 5: This is the fun part- while holding the fabric in one hand, use your finger to push up and make a bubble or balloon.
Fold under the squared off points on the bottom.
Place the puff on the palm of one hand and gently pinch the top center and twist in a smooth motion (either direction) until you can't twist any further and push down. Then quickly iron down with a hot iron to hold rose in shape.
I can't take a picture of twisting it and hold the camera at the same time but remember practice makes perfect and you may need to try it a few times before you get it!

Pom-Pom Tutorial

This is a tutorial for making pom-poms using your
fingers. This one is a small, two-finger pom-pom
(about 1" in diameter) but you can make bigger ones
by using more fingers. As far as yarn choice, thinner
and softer yarn will make a more pleasing pom-pom.

The Bandwagon

Well, everyone else was doing it. So I thought, especially since it would benefit Haiti, that I would finally purchase Lil Blue Boo's Sienna Dress Pattern. Ashley apparently knows what she is doing because that pattern could not be any easier to follow. Goose will be getting a lot more of these dresses by spring. They make the perfect play dress. And I can't tell you how good it feels to really be tearing...or cutting... into my t-shirts that have been set aside for years to be turned in something.

So, here's the first of many to come, made from some of my favorite super soft American Eagle tee shirts from college.

Girl's Modesty Shorts (Biker Shorts) Tutorial

Well, the sun is getting warmer and the tights are coming off. But those pesky little panties keep showing as Goose continues to climb trees, garden, ride her bike and jump on the trampoline. Some little biker shorts, or modesty shorts, are just the solution, and crazy easy to make! I made all three pairs from old tee-shirts and spiced them up with scraps from other tee-shirt projects. Here's what I used and how I did it:

Car Basket Tutorial

Here it is. The Car Basket Tutorial. Why do I call it a basket?? Because, well, that's what I was originally intending for the car, but I had a hard time finding something that was just the right size. And I wanted something with some pockets. So I made my own "basket."

First, measure your space. How big do you want this sucker?? Me? I needed mine to be 13" square. So all of the instructions will be given to those dimensions. However, for your own, just measure your sapce and decide how big and then cut your panels one inch bigger than that. Now let's get started.

Here's what you'll need:
4- 14" squares of heavy weight fabric (something like canvas, or upholstery fabric)
5- 14" squares of medium weight fabric (anything from a good cotton to home dec. Mine was a recylced curtain)
1- 10" x 21" of the heavy weight fabric (for front pockets)
1- 12" x 18" of the heavy weight fabric (for book pocket)
1- 14" square of faux suede, or something else that is non-slip
5- 14" squares of  Peltex 71f single-sided fusible heavy stabilizer
4 yards coordinating double fold bias tape
Other obvious sewing notions that I am assuming that you have;)
